America the Great

To really appreciate the Statue of Liberty you have to behold her through the tear filled eyes of immigrants coming in on one-way tickets. All their belongings contained in a few cardboard suitcases. Looking up at this kindly angel, welcoming them to the land of their dreams, you have to see her from the point of view of veterans returning from foreign wars, while many a comrade lie buried far from home. Entrance into the kingdom of God is like this but on the highest possible level. A journey to freedom from an old way of life, freedom from bondage to sin, pledging allegiance to a new homeland, accepting concomitant duties, privileges, and responsibilities. Father, grant us entrance into your kingdom and the grace to remain there. In Jesus’ name, amen.
